'99 Cavalier. About 15K miles ago, I replaced the rear struts and their upper mounts. Today, I found that the metal sleeve in one of the mounts (ie, where the strut rod goes through, and tightens down on) had ripped out, and the top of the strut rod was just flapping around inside the spring.
This car is very light in the back, and we don't bang around in it. The strut seems to be OK - at least, it's not jammed, nor loose in the cylinder.
I find this quite surprising. Other than a defective part, I'd appreciate any insight on how this could happen.
