Gasket Dressing

I am replacing the gasket for the back plate of my rear differential. Do I need to add "gasket sealer", or is just wetting the gasket with the gear oil enough??? Thanks

Do not wet the gasket with gear oil! You may use a gasket compound of some type if you wish. I recommend Copper Cote, or its generic "Copper Gasket Spray". Do not use a hardening gasket dressing such as Indian Head Gasket Shellac unless you never want to remove the cover again with anything short of an atom bomb.

Silicone works fine, with or without gasket. I like Hylomar even better, especially if you think you may want to remove it occasionally. Rex in Fort Worth

Thanks for your message! I would have had to redo the job! I asked the guy at "Autozone" if I should put any compound on the gasket. He said "naw, you can just put some oil on it if you want". I am glad I asked her first... Thanks
