Headlights

My wife used to leave the headlights on some of the time when she left our 2003 Merc Sable. Then the lights would run the battery down to nothing.

Now my Chevy Aveo LT 2011 Turns OFF the headlamps (all lighting) as soon as the key is turned off and removed (within one second). Amazing IMPROVEMENT from my point of view.

One less thing to worry about.

Don't be so sure. My Hyundai Sonata does that too - for the most part. But a few times it's left the headlights on.

Except now your wife will forget to turn the key off.

She isn't that far gone yet, but admits to having filled a cup with water one recent morning and sat down to drink the cup of coffee she never made.

I don't think telling her to check to make sure she turned the lights off is going to work at this point.

Don't people get taught to go through a mental checklist anymore?

Were you?

Sure, that's part of driver's education. Get in the car, check brake on, transmission in neutral, seat belts on, choke out, clutch out, start the car, choke in, wait for oil pressure, look both ways, first gear, parking brake off, clutch in, look again, pull out.

You didn't have to memorize checklists in driver's ed?

Our Toyotas give you a little time to get from the garage to the house, and then they turn off all lights. They havent failed yet, but with anything that has a bit of complexity in design and manufacturing, they could fail.

You forgot to apply the service brake before releasing the parking brake :)

No. But when I got my DL, there was no such thing as drivers Ed

I had private instruction.

I got my DL in 1961. No such thing as Driver's Ed in the public school system, except for some VERY rudimentary junk.

Of course, I still had to take a road test and a written test to get the State License.
