ok..new wrinkle

was having trouble with my 1991 lebaron running rough (trying to stall out while driving .. hard to start).. i replaced the fuel filter thinking that was the problem.. WRONG.. still acting up.. i can hear the fuel pump kicking on when i turn the key so know that is probably not the problem.. figured i would disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to reset the computer.. NOW when i try to start the car it won't.. i tried to jump start it and was able to start it that way but when i take my foot off the gas peddle the car dies.. also now the check engin light is on.. i am totally stumped.. anyone have any ideas??

If your battery doesn't have enough 'juice' to crank over the engine, maybe you need to get that fixed first. If the voltage is too low, electronics sometimes go on strike.

You also need to find out exactly why the CEL is on. Have you tried to check for error codes. You would have erased the prior error codes when you disconnected the battery, but since you got it restarted, you may have set new ones.

It is not uncommon that cars run poorly after the ECM has been reset. They normally have to readapt to the conditions. Some cars have recommended procedures to make this go quicker, and with others you can just limp along until they 'get well'.

From what I have available for my Chrysler product manual and I would imagine it will work for your application You do the following: Without starting the engine, turn the ignition key: ON OFF ON OFF ON. This sequence should start the check engine light flashing. Count the flashes. For example, flash flash-flash is a 12 (Meaning Battery Power to the PCM Was Discontinued)

You may have stored more than one code, or even none. When you disconnected the battery, you erased everything, but you may have run it long enough to have stored new ones.

Before you do any of this, you may want to double check the engine compartment for broken vacuum lines or hoses which have slipped off, etc.

Some thoughts on the symptoms........

you may have created another problem in an attempt to repair the first symptom.

Often times after disconnecting the battery on a vehical for repairs, it will either run extremely pour or not at all due to carbon build-up on the throttle plate...which causes the throttle to not "seat". Cleaning the throttle plate and housing with a good spray cleaner usually solves the symptom.

However........ as I stated... you have likley created a secondary symptom in an attempt to solve the initial complaint of "stalling while driving...hard to start". I would suggest checking the exhaust for restriction... the secondary ignition for good spark at the cylinders... the fuel pressure for volume and performance.

jest some thoughts.... take'm for what you paid for em.

When you do this, you may need to drive the car at various speeds, stopping, re-starting from standstill, etc., to re-learn the computer. It probably now has forgotten some parameters, and now has un-controlled ones, by having removed the batt. cable. HTH, s

After reading the OP even closer and further than you suggested, I see where he said "NOW when i try to start the car it won't.. i tried to jump start it and *was able to start it that way* but when i take my foot off the gas peddle the car dies"; here I ASSumed that he could keep it running for test-driving if he kept his foot on the accelerator--ASSumption based on the fact that HE is the one who said it dies when he takes his foot off the gas pedal. Again I ASSumed it could be test-driven after jump-starting when he said "also now the check engin light is on"--hopefully he meant this light was on

*while running*, as it would indicate nothing if it only burned with ignition ON and engine not running. Think you'll agree there is lots of missing and needed info for us to give a proper diagnosis. Maybe some of yours, mine, and others' guesses will at least give him some starting points. sdlomi2
