Re: Transmission Oil Change Mistake

|Hi all... | |Last night I changed the manual transmission oil on my 1994 4x4 22RE |(I think the tranny is a W56) for the first time (bought it used a |little while ago). | |However, in doing so, I mistakenly filled the tranny by removing the |ristrict pin instead of the check/fill plug. (don't ask...it was late, |i was half asleep, and, mostly, i'm a moron :-) | |It did seem strange that the tranny took 5 qts of oil when the manual |says it should take a little over 3. But, I drove it around for about |5 miles and it worked fine. This morning, however, I realized what I |did and drained the excess oil by removing the check/fill plug. | |So I have a few questions (everything seems OK, but I just want to |make sure): | |1. Did I harm anything inside the transmission by either filling it at |the wrong place or driving it for a little while with too much oil in |the tranny? | |2. Is there anything else (besides draining the excess oil--i used |MobilOne Synthetic 75W90, btw, in case that matters) I should do to |remedy the situation?

this is the part that would concern me. Does the owners manual specify GL-5 gear oil or something like what you used? A lot of (most?) modern manual trannies require motor oil or ATF.

I don't think over-filling can cause any problems in such a short time.

In two of my manual autos, One took normal motor oil (10w-30) and the other took gear oil 75w-90.

I used normal oil both times, not synthetic oil, and each manual took about 3 quarts.

I did read somewhere, that if you used a synthetic oil, make sure it has friction modifiers in it. I think mobil 1 has them, but I'm not sure.
