Transmission Oil Change Mistake

Hi all...

Last night I changed the manual transmission oil on my 1994 4x4 22RE (I think the tranny is a W56) for the first time (bought it used a little while ago).

However, in doing so, I mistakenly filled the tranny by removing the ristrict pin instead of the check/fill plug. (don't ask...it was late, i was half asleep, and, mostly, i'm a moron :-)

It did seem strange that the tranny took 5 qts of oil when the manual says it should take a little over 3. But, I drove it around for about

5 miles and it worked fine. This morning, however, I realized what I did and drained the excess oil by removing the check/fill plug.

So I have a few questions (everything seems OK, but I just want to make sure):

  1. Did I harm anything inside the transmission by either filling it at the wrong place or driving it for a little while with too much oil in the tranny?

  1. Is there anything else (besides draining the excess oil--i used MobilOne Synthetic 75W90, btw, in case that matters) I should do to remedy the situation?

  2. Is there a torque spec for the restrict pin? Seems like something that would have one, but I can't find one anywhere. (Just out of curiosity, what exactly does the restrict pin do?)

  1. Should end of the restrict pin be greased? If so, what type of grease? In thinking it was the check/fill plug, I cleaned off what I thought was just sludge buildup. In retrospect, however, I'm thinking it might have been grease that was supposed to be there.

Thanks for any help.

No harm Stan, too much oil is better then none.

Well, if you like, make sure its for manual trannies etc.

Yes, every bolt on your Toyota has a torque but snug it up and you'll be fine.
