I'm sure they do want nuclear power actually since their own economy is growing fast enought that it could mean they are no longer an pil exporter in the long term if they don't find alternatives and they want to keep that foreign currency income.

For you Brent, the ideal scenario I think would be to have 2 vehicles. Since you only rarely need to haul stuff, that vehicle could clearly be not quite a beater but a fairly inexpensive pre-owned truck that you simply keep in good running order.

Sweden has determined to be energy self-sufficient by 2020. A large part of that is ethanol fuel. It actually has the highest use of ethanol fuel in the world aside from Brazil. Sweden plans to make extensive use of wood waste for ethanol production ( it has a lot of forestry).

A sensible choice of feedstock does not require vast quantities of fertiliser to grow.

The 'waste' from ethanol/butanol etc production can be returned to the ground where it will re-enter the growth cycle.

Where are you getting your statistics. Brazil and the USA produce about the same amount of ethanol each and that represents 95% of the worlds ethanol production. China and India represent about 3% and I don't recall ever even seeing Sweden on a list of producers.

Why? As of right now, a hybrid gasoline (or diesel) is the most efficient way to move a car around. Pure electric doesn't match the overall efficiency because charging batteries is and powerplant efficiency combined can't match the peak efficiency of the ICE that you so casually and stupidly dismiss. Chemical-to-mechanical efficiency of ~40% in a portable package is NOT something to be sneezed at, its quite impressive, actually.

And smile...

What a load of crap!! The current Chrysler 5.7L ("new Hemi") v8 idles between 400-500 RPM to maximize efficiency, and it does so perfectly well without stalling. Just for grins, I've idled even '60s vintage v8s down to 300 RPM or so. That's not practical because the low idle speed would eventually cause camshaft damage in those cars, but with roller cams its perfectly reasonable to idle a v8 down around 300-500 RPM in a modern vehicle. The factory recommended idle speed on 60s and 70s v8s (except the high-performance ones with more radical cams) was around 600 rpm.

Get a clue before you post garbage.

Quit thinking energy and think POWER. Sure, if you give a plant enough months to grow in a cold climate, it will eventually gather and store enough chemical energy. But in an equatorial climate, the plants store the energy FASTER, and moving more energy per unit time is more POWER. That's how Brazil can keep up with demand. Colder climate crops generally cannot.

And how many DECADES does it take to re-grow forest??????

I can see that irony and sarcasm are lost on you.

Nah, the reason Brazil can keep up with demand is because demand is so much smaller in Brazil. US ethanol production is, I believe, now ahead of Brazil and if not now will be way ahead by next year when new plants go on line. And in 5 years we may be double what Brazil produces. Ultimately the solution to the US energy needs in the future will come from a constellation of technologies. The biggest single one will be conservation. That will happen one way or another whether we choose it or want it or not.

And temperate climates do much better for agriculture than the equatorial regions. Rain forests do well in the tropics because the forest nurtures and protects the soil. Agriculture requires exposing the soil to the sun which pretty much fries the beneficial organisms and nutrients that inhabit the soil and are needed for rigorous plant growth.
