Ticking me off: Service Dept keeps filling my tires to THEIR Max pressure

What does "correct" actually mean in terms of tire pressure? Best traction/handling? Best comfort? Best longevity? Something else?

A combination of all those things, really. and in certain vehicles, the difference between comfort and handling might be 10PSI.

But 'correct' might be closer to what's listed on the door placard of most modern cars, based upon reaction of family and friends I've set tire pressures for. Most reactions range from "Smoother riding" to "more predictable handling". On cars where tire pressure was mostly at one of two extremes: 4-10PSI below even the door sticker, or 5-10PSI above it(closer to the max cold # on the tires). No one in the middle, or even close to car mfg recommended pressures. Some cars had four different gauge readings: 20, 29, 42, and 33 psi! ?? And the spare donut could be anywhere from 50-80 psi.

I set all main tires to 1-2psi above door pillar sticker, and have had no complaints.

Some people can have a knot on a bicycle tire and that tire will last forever. No such luck for me though.

You used to inflate the tires to the max pressure but you stopped. What was the reasoning behind that?

At one point, on the car I owned, I noticed the tire inflation sticker on that car's b-pillar, and decided to try the pressures listed there: F:31psi, R:34psi.

While the ride was softer, I felt that it actually accelerated faster, and the response to my steering inputs was more direct and in proportion to them. After adding a pound or two to both front and rears, I found that some shoulder wear caused by the recommended settings had been reduced.

From that point on, I always referenced the b-pillar sticker for cold tire pressures, and I've never looked back.

dsi1(et al): The auto mfg B-pillar door stickers are on vehicles for a REASON. At the very least, they are a guideline as to where tire pressures should be set.

Now, if you can post official, actual instructions to inflate tires to cold max pressure on tires here, that would be appreciated. From a TIRE or VEHICLE mfg, website, or association such as AAA, NOT from a blog or forum, please.

______ So almost a week ago, I posed a challenge to dsi1(or anyone else) who could post a link to, or an image of,official documentation instructing owners of motor vehicles to inflate their tires to the maximum cold pressure stamped on the tire itself as opposed to what is on the B-pillar label of the vehicle.

Guess such instructions do not exist.

My, aren't we so self-satisfied. Wadda ya want - a medal?

The info I got was from a tire expert. Perhaps other tire experts will tell me different. What I'm not going to do is put much stock in people with no tire training at all advising me on how to set my tire pressure. The way I see it, we have the exact same training in this field. Think yourself more qualified than I, do you?

Feel free to do whatever you want. I'm going to do my thing too. Are we all happy now? :)

"from a tire expert" is not a valid source. Have him come on here and present his argument.

And I am not doing "whatever I want" - I'm following the vehicle mfg's recommendations as stated on the B-pillar. I didn't pull those pressures out of a hat. They were arrived at by testing and engineering.

I also said that they were not mandatory, just a guideline. I myself go a couple PSI over them. But if everyone blanketly went by the pressure listed on the tires themselves, we'd have as many blowouts and accidents due to insufficient contact patch as we would blowouts due to underinflation and sidewall scrubbing the roads. And underinflation is defined as below the vehicle mfg's recommendations stickered on the vehicle itself - NOT below the cold MAX pressure, MAX, mind you, on the tires.

Just because a nonstick frying pan says "max temperature 500F", in the instructions or label on it, does that mean you must use it at, or near, that temperature??

Think!

A post from some random dumb-f*ck called Theckmah on usenet, beating his hobbyhorse, is not a valid argument. "Have him come on here ..." is not an argument at all; it's the childish challenge of a retarded idiot making a pathetically obvious trolling attempt.

dsi1:

Here's example of someone who is not an expert at anything except stalking users around usenet, and spewing hatred out the wrong end of a sewer truck:

I already knew that. You sound like some kind of yokel.

I never said that that I use the maximum tire pressure as on the sidewall. I'll inflate the tire to whatever I want - the same as you do.
