'03 4Runner V8 - Black exhaust residue - something to be concerned?

Oct 30, 2005 2 Replies

Hi all. I am noticing my '03 4Runner V8's exhaust pipe has a small amount of black carbon built-up. It could be easily wiped clean. Is this something to be concerned? I also own a '01 4Runner, and it's exhaust is clean as the day I drove it off the lot.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

I think from memory it has to do with the fuel mixture but I had a '90

4Runner (no longer) for over 10 years and it had the same build up on the end of the tail pipe for years and it ran fine as is.

If you do not have a check engine light and you pass emissions tests, you do not have anything to worry about. It wouldn't hurt to check your air filter though.
