Check engine light codes p0441 and p0446

I have read many horror stories on the internet about these 2 code

having people replace on their corolla: gas cap, charcoal canister sensor, O2 sensor both before and afte converter and vacume switching valve. And after paying hundreds to ove

1000 dollars and still not correcting the check engine light problem. Disconecting the battaery makes it go out but it comes back on agai after the computer cycles after 100- 150 mi. I know some black tape will over the light will fix it but it will fai emissions in PA. Reseting the compter will also cause it to fai emissions. Some people say toyota dealers never fix the problem and don't know ho to.

My question is how can I get this light to go out on my 1999 coroll diagnosed with these 2 codes and not go through the unecessary expens that these people have gone through? If anyone can solve this proble for me I would be very happy

The only reason you've seen these 'horror stories' on message boards is because no one ever posts instances when they are able to find competent technicians and have their evap problems fixed succesfully. Many people refuse to pay any money to actually have their cars sytems diagnosed, instead turning to boards like these hoping for a cheap easy fix. Then, when (suprise!) they are on their 3rd replacement part and the problem isn't fixed, they start complaining that it cost close to $1000 to fix a $200 problem. This vocal minority is causing you to blow your problem out of proportion. Every Toyota dealer has the equipment and the info to fix these problems, and most do it with ease. These are not uncommon failure codes, after all. You will pay a little more when you go to a dealer, but your only other option is finding a very good independent tech on your own, a prospect that to some make spending the extra cash at the dealer worth the smaller headache. However, the bottom line is that you need to find someone that is competent with your Toyota to perform actual tests on the system with which you are having problems.

Check the Codes here,

P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow

P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction

Why in Hell would anybody replace an O2 Sensor to clear either of these codes? The trouble is most commonly related to a leak in the gas cap, or if the car is older, a leak in one of the hoses that serve to vent the system.
