Dash board light is out...

My mechanics said he doesn't know how to fix it? Is he just incompetent?

What's wrong and How much should I expect to pay?

You mean all the dash lights are out? Are the "running" lights on? No fuses blown? Or are you talking about a single dash light out, where 1/2 the dash is lit?

Could be something simple - most likely is something simple (like a connection / pin) if the dash isn't lit, but everythign else works. The hard part is finding it. Take it to an electrical specialist, expect to pay for at least one hour of labor.

Possibly.

What year and model vehicle?

Are all of the dashboard lights out or just one or two?

Have you checked to make sure the rheostat is not turned down all the way?

2001 Toyota Corolla

All of the lights are out, even half the light for the temperature/AC (but it is intermitten for that one, sometimes it decides to light up again.) But the dashboard light is out permanently.

Check the dashboard light knob to make sure it is not turned down all the way. If all of the dashboard lights are out, I'd guess that there is a loose connection somewhere.

By any chance do you have any aftermarket accessories installed like an aftermarket radio, satellite radio, remote starter, security system, etc.? If so, I'd start by checking connections near where the aftermarket accessories get their power. Check the instrument fuses under the dashboard, and check the connecter to the dimmer knob.

CD-player count?

Yes, anything not installed by the factory that is hooked into the car's electrical system by means other than the cigarette lighter counts.
