Dealership makes the difference!

Earlier today, I visited a dealership very close to my good old Saturn dealership (turns out the company owns both lots, which covers GM, Toyota, etc.) and is just around the corner (never noticed this dealership before).

I talked to the salesman, told him about the outstanding service I get at the Saturn dealership and it turns out that because they are owned by both, I will get the benefit of the same level of service at their Toyota dealership when I am ready to buy.

Answers to my questions were quick and accurate.

  • Teams designated to the buyer - always the same service team to handle my car.

  • Free car wash with every service.

  • Free Roadside Assistance with purchase of the extended warranty.

The salesman told me to compile my list of options and when the vehicle of my choice arrives, I asked him to give me a call, then I return for the test drive, then if satisfied, discuss the numbers.

Not to feel pressured, I told him I'm in no rush.

Life is good! ;) _________ ===fish=== ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

I got my Extended Warranty free. I was going to buy it, but passed on the $1250 price tag. I was going to buy one from a Lexus dealer in CT (you DON'T have to buy the warranty from the dealer you bought the car from, and some offer them at deep discounts! A better warranty from the Lexus dealer was $400 less!)

I decided not to buy any warranty.

Then, I get a letter from Toyota, saying that since my Scion was a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle, the warranty was FREE. With Roadside Assistance.

Guess I can burn my AAA card...

Shop around. Toyota of Greenfield (MA) is listed as one of the best places to buy a warranty. Also, that Lexus dealer in CT...can't remember now...don't have to!

You bought a used car, that's why it was free.

I am shopping for a new car. _________ ===fish=== ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

You can still beat up the dealer! Extended warranties are really nothing but profit for the dealer. You're buying an insurance policy, and there is a LOT of room for profit there.

What do they want to charge you?

What do you suggest?

I could try to get a price quote on the Internet - not sure which site would provide such valuable info on that.

When it comes time to discuss numbers, it always helps to have printouts on hand. _________ ===fish=== ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

Got a color printer? Go buy a package of the biggest paper it will handle. Make a huge sign saying "Do Not Wash This Car Today, Please". Take the sign to Staples or whoever does laminating in your area. Pay the dollar or two to have it laminated. Put it on the dashboard if you bring the car in for service when the temp is below freezing. No matter how good the service may be, they will not show up at your house to de-ice your door locks so you can get into the car.

Extended "warranties" are actually insurance policies. I am not a fan of them in general, but if you decide to get one, the only one I recommend is the Toyota Extra Care. Aftermarket service contracts are often so full of loopholes that they basically cover nothing.

Extended warranties are NOT needed for Toyotas, unless, of course, they are sold for under, say $100.

Then read the fine print in the Toyota Extra Care one. I read it, then decided NO damn way would I shell out for it. Better to simply budget for POSSIBLE repairs down the road, so to speak. With the Camry, chances are that the cost of the Toyota EC will be MORE than the cost of the repairs. That's how insurance works, folks, MOST people pay MORE in premiums than they RECEIVE in payouts. Guaranteed, else the company goes out of business.

If or when you need warranty repairs (as I once did on a GM product) do you move to the far end of the l*o*n*g*e*s*t line at some future date? OR- are you treated as a cash customer?

Extended warranties are not a bad idea for many, many vehicles. However, on Toyotas, no way.

A couple of things here. First, I would not buy an extra warranty on a Toyota. Wasted money most likely. This is why you are buying a Toyota, so you will not need to worry about this stuff, you just drive it forever. Second, Is the service that one gets from a dealer any different if you bought the vehicle there or not? I never thought so. Whenever I brought a car into a dealer they have not asked me if I bought the car there, they just did what they do without regard to that. Therefore I have always believed that the service department of the dealer one buys from is not relevant at all. Tomes

Dealers are not supposed to have separate lines for warranty and cash customers

Having AAA can be beneficial if you need a tow because many tow companies give first priority to AAA members, and anyone else may have to wait several hours, even when the weather is clear. Otherwise keep the phone numbers of some companies that do nothing but towing and aren't affiliated with any garage (in the Phoenix area, Shamrock Towing is good for that).

Like I said, I am not a fan of service contracts.

I have seen Extra Care cover quite a few repairs, where that is not the case with aftermarket service contracts. Kind of the lesser of the evils.

People would buy the aftermarket ones because they were cheaper than Extra Care, and then when the aftermarket one went out of business or refused to cover a repair, they would come to me.

Did you say what you're buying? For some reason, I thought it was a RAV4. Try this:

For a RAV4, 4WD, 6years/72,000 miles, $0 deductible, the quote was $750. If you REALLY want the warranty, this is a pretty decent price...

If the customer came in with a 'coupon' for an oil change and free wash, we had to wash it. Period.
