How to tell if my Toyota Camry is American or Japenese product

I need to order some parts for my 2002 Toyota Camry LE (4 cylinder), but the person from the store and I don't know whether my car is an American or Japenase product, could someone help me how I can determine that?

As far as I know, the first letter of your vin number is an indicator should

J for Japan, M for Mexico, etc. Both our Toyota and our Scion's numbers start with J.

First letter of VIN starts with J if it is a Japanese manufacturer assembled in Japan (as noted in the post above). Otherwise it will be a 4 if made by a Japanese owned company assembled in the US. Even if a car from a Japanese manufacturer is assembled in the US, it must have a certain percent of the parts made in North America to qualify for a 4.

It is important to distinguish "assembled" from "made in" because automakers outsource the manufacturer of most of the parts of a car to other companies (even if they design and spec the parts themselves).

Who said the parts guy didn't know?

Anyway, the VIN number is on the insurance card that the state requires us to have, so most people can find out without by just looking in their wallet.

If the first character of the 17 digit VIN is J, it was assembled in Japan. If it is a 4, it was assembled in the U.S.

Mexico is number 3 not M. U.S is typically a 1 on most american brands . Import brands typically 4 or 5 . My Tacoma is a 5. But J is Japan. Scott

Hah! I bet 90+% of readers don't know what you two are talking about (but I do).

Are you a word nerd too?

I was that annoying kid who reminded the English teacher to assign homework...

Depends on the age of the reader - before that skill generally went out of practice/vogue. I had to diagram plenty of sentences in JH English; can have a sort of satisfaction. (I wouldn't want to attempt that one, though!)

Ever listen to "Says You" on NPR? ;-)

Arghh. Now that would be annoying!

"Cathy F." ...

Nope - I hate radio.

Guilty as charged.

I honestly don't think I've ever heard someone say that before...

Anyway, as you probably surmised, "Says You" is a program about words & phrases.

Look at the VIN (it should be on your vehicle registration and visible through the windshield on a little metal plate in front of the driver's seat). IF the VIN begins with a 1, 4 or 5, it is made in the US, if it begins with a 2, it is made in Canada, and if begins with a J, it was made in Japan (If it begins without something else, it was made outside North America and Japan).

(Look up VIN in google or wikipedia (choose vehicle identification number) for more information).

I hate "music" radio, because of all the blather in-between the songs, which are getting further apart.

Yes, you can subscribe to satellite radio, but I'll be damned if I'm paying for radio.

Talk radio is frustrating to me, because so often I'd like to offer a differing view to the schpiel I'm hearing.

*shrug*

Never used to bother me, until I started listening to NPR. Now I can't hack it (music radio) anymore; most esp. not in the mornings, to wake up to. But love NPR - varied enough to keep interest. Serious stuff, humorous stuff. Humorous, but informational - as in "Says You". Even if it is trivial. ;-) (Do you know the difference between "dunking" & "dipping" your food?)

You could always e-mail in your POV.
