Personally, that is easy. In 2000 I bought my one granddaughter a new car. She searched Edmunds for prices. The car I bought had an MSRP nearly $1,700 LESS than listed by Edmunds. They listed the moon roof and leather interior as extra cost options, when in fact they were no cost options. My one son bought a 2005 Grand Marquis in July for $4,000 less than the price, as equipped, listed by Edmonds. The 2005 Mustang GT convertible that I bought in March was listed by Edmonds at $31,200 the actual MSRP was $30,600. ;)
The point is if one wants to discover what it actually costs to buy ANY vehicle, one needs to go to a dealer and negotiate a real world total drive home price. That is what I do every year ;)
Yeah, I'm going to waste my time and some salesman's time on that. I'll trust KBB and Edmunds, your anectdote notwithstanding, until I get additional evidence that they're frequently off.
Edmunds has been fairly good at predicting used car prices for me; I've bought four in the last three years and Edmunds has been reasonably close to the market each time.
