Is the MR2 a reskinned Celica GTS?

The MR2 is a mid engine, rear wheel drive vehicle. The Celicas sold in the U.S. are front engine, front wheel drive vehicle. Completely different chassis.

All 3 generations of MR2s have been unique I believe. The mk1 MR2 shared quite a few components with the Corolla of it's time though. The previous shape Celica I heard was essentially a Carina (Carina probably wasn't available in the US). Obviously the mk3 MR2 without a roof isn't based on any other Toyota.
