There's a SF short story by Harlan Ellison you might enjoy: it's set in the 1970s but sufficiently up to date: "Dogfight On 101". A USA in which vehicles are armed and take each other on in fast duels as they scorch along the highways. Our hero drives a mild piece of work but gets into a spat with a national-standard ace.
