As a beginner myself, I would start at the beginning. Make sure your battery is good and all the connections are good. Next you go to the starter. If you don't get past these two steps your car will never get started.
PS: Just because lights and things work doesn't mean the battery is good and charged, get it tested.
ANY car will start with the proper amount of money thrown at it!
Have you pushed the clutch pedal all the way down while you are turning the key ?
It could be the battery. I had a 93 Tercel and the battery is very easy to replace (much earlier that the headlights !)

If you can hear the starter click, then the clutch safety switch is not a problem.
When the starter clicks but doesn't engage, possible causes are a dead battery; bad connections at the battery clamps, ground point, and/or starter; bad starter relay; or bad starter solenoid contacts.
