The big problem with your line of reasoning is that the design of the Vietnam Memorial was opposed by the extreme right, notably Reagan's Secretary of Interior and convicted felon, James Watt, for being too anti-war

Also strongly opposed by Pat Buchanan because the design was by an Asian. I think he's since given his stamp of approval.
