92 camry wagon shocks/struts

Anyone have any idea if shocks or struts on this car are doable by the backyard mechanic? I know some cars are sealed struts in front and some are not - The whole right side of this car bounces when pushed down - the left side is fine - just had to return the shop manual to the library so no info on this job. Any info is appreciated. thanx, ignatz

Typical inexpensive MacPherson setup. Should be no problems. It may be easier if you replace with a complete assembly, like Monroe QuickStrut. If you are mechanically inclined you may be able to swap one corner in less than 30 minutes, working slow. ;) ;)

Just make sure all the rubber components are replaced, including the mount at this mileage. So the QuickStrut if available may be worth the cost than buying the components one by one.

2 for $299. not sure if these are the monroes or their own brand.

They are typically available for each corner of the car. Looks like

171958, 171957 are the only ones (rear) available for this year. Check the catalog on

Also check out Gabriel Ultra struts. These have multi-stage inertia sensitive valving. Pretty good stuff. Stay away from OEM KYBs (aka Keep Your Bilsteins). You can use Monroe mounts if needed.
