This auto has about 94,000 miles and appears to be in good condition all around.
So what is my problem?
Hood release works fine, but how do I make the hood stay up so I can check oil, etc.?
Cannot find anything about this in the manual.
I thought if I just raised the hood high enough a lock inside one of the two hydraulic pistons would do it. but it doesn't.
Help, please!
Those things wear out after a while. Either find a stick or buy two new pistons.

Either carry a stick the right length to prop up the hood, or replace those hydraulic pistons - sounds like they've lost their charge. They're supposed to contain a gas under pressure causing them to expand.
I've got a '94, and usually the hood stays open just fine, but on cold mornings, it can come crashing down unexpectedly after a few minutes.
Since I work in the garage, I have a certain wood pole that I wedge against the bottom of the wall, and the other end next to the hood release, under the metal loop - that way there's no way the hood can move.
Here's another idea - just speculation.
You might be able to find a base model DX or something similar at a wrecking yard that came from the factory with the hinged metal rod that swings up to secure the open hood, and retrofit that to your car. Might have to drill a hole or two, but could work for you. That way you know the hood will stay up, and the cost should be quite reasonable.
