95 Camry Vibration

My 95 Camry, LE, 162,500 miles has what feels like a lateral vibration between 55-60 mph. Have rotated the tires, checked pressure and had alignment checked. Any ideas appreciated.

New tires, balanced and wheel alignment didn't solve the problem.

This problem has been brought up several times in this newsgroup with that design Camry. The answer from those who DON'T have the problem is always "balance the tires or bad wheels" or something like that. So far I have not been able to find the problem in my 1994 but am suspecting the right drive shaft or somehow related to the transmission. If you accelerate through that speed range it is noticeable; if you cruise through that range it is not as bad. I have had the same problem for nearly three years now and no mechanic can tell me what the problem is. You can search the newsgroup or Google's newsgroup history for these conversations for more details.

Replace the struts and replace the suspension/sway bar bushings.

I too still have a similar problem (95-105 kph in a 1994 camry). After many attempts to fix one of the tyre mechanics indicated I had a slight buckles in 2 rims (were on the rear when problem first surfaced, but were on front at time of diagnosis). I installed 2 new rims and vibration is better but still evident. The wheels were balacing perfectly, but the very slight buckles were definitely causing part of the problem. I now have to decide whether to replace the other two rims hoping that may fix the problem, or if something else is wrong.

I have noticed, that the vibration is barely noticible if I 'cruise' through the problem speed range, but is very harsh under load/acceleration in that speed range. Vibration is not related to engine rpm, as it will happen in that speed range only, and irrespective of whether I am in 4th or 5th gear. Does not vibrate in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear.

My next test will be a front-rear rotation to see if that changes the vibration. It did not last time when I installed 2 new tyres, but I think is worth a try with the new rims. All my sway bar bushings are OK, so for me that is not the problem. I only hope I find the true cause before the car (and me) vibrates to pieces or I run out of money (balances 3 times, alignment, tyres, rims and lots of labour so far).

Hope this helps Andrew

Your experiences are very similar to mine. I also own a 1997 Camry with the same wheel size and one day exchanged entire wheel/tire assemblies from each car to see if it was a wheel problem. The problem remained with the 1994 Camry even though one of its original wheels had a slight wobble.

I find it ironic that there are several people in this newsgroup complaining of a vibration/wobble in the same design car through the same speed range with the same steps taken to diagnose it. It won't be long before someone here asks for photocopies of maintenance records showing how often the tires have been rotated, rebalanced, aligned, etc...

Thanks for advice, but mounts all 'look' OK. I assumed that because it happens at a particular speed and not rpm that it is not engine related. Is my assumption wrong?

Thanks Andrew

Possibly worn inner drivers (tripod and carrier bearing)... was = semi-common on Saab 900's I used to work on.

This is the most plausible explanation I have heard yet. I will look into this solution. Thanks.
