my 96 camry is leaking oil from around the grommets that hold on the valve cover (under the plug wire boots). what would cause oil to leak from there. The grommets are completely tight.

Loose spark plugs ?
Your seals are old hard and leaky. Replace them.
There is an actual double lipped seal in the valve cover for each metal park plug tube. These seals harden with age. Remove the valve cover, pry out the seals, press in new ones. Toyota priced proudly these seals but that's your repair.
