97 Camry...low idle when starting out....

Aug 28, 2004 3 Replies

even stalls out a couple of times. Can barely tell it's running. Then I drive off, get going and it's fine for the rest of the day. If I let it sit all day, it happens again like clockwork....real annoying. Are my plugs bad? Had a major tune-up late last year.....plubs, fuel injection service and fuel filter. All done at Firestone. Any suggestions appreciated.

Your AIC (air idle control) valve is sticky. Very common. It's the thing that is supposed to increase the idle speed when the engine is cold. It is a squarish thing, located at the bottom of the throttle body where the big rubber manifold connects to the aluminum part. Many folks remove the intake rubber boot, and spray carb cleaner into the valve area. Engine off! Brush with a toothbrush, etc.

When you do yours, do mine too.

Search this group for "IAC" or "idle air control" for more information.

Search for IAC. There are detailed instructions about correcting this problem. Expect to have to repeat this procedure every 3-6 months or so. Just did it last week on our '96 Camry. A dealer will want to replace it rather than clean it, but it's several hundred dollars.
