98 camry w/150m miles. cv joint shot-approximate cost to fix?

dealer tells me that the grinding noise on a left turn is a worn cv axel, joint-whatever. Should this be going at this mileage and if so what should it cost to put in one set (left side). should i replace both? perplexed and suffering from a bleeding wallet. thanks in advance.

Have you checked the conditions of the cv boots? Torn?? If torn, dirt have gotten in and joint are worn. Require replacing joints or entire shaft. Most replace entire shaft which comes with new boots. Expect to pay approx $100-150 for each shaft and labor $75-150 each side at a non-dealer mech. You maybe able to replace shaft yourself. Check

for price, they seem to have a good rebuild axles, use new parts and re-ground cv joints which some of the discount stores carry.

Well, if you get them from Toyota, they are $75-125 each, brand new. If you get them aftermarket, they are $59 rebuilt. Brand new should run another 90-125K, rebuilt will go approx 60K. They aren't that hard to do, esp if you can get a lift somewhere (maybe 30-45 mins). And get a Chilton's or Haynes.

Make sure its not something simpler like a bad wheel bearing first. I had one go at 120,000 and one at 160,000. Check the rubber boots under the car first to see if they are cracked. You will know because there will be grease everywhere from the cv joints.

How is a wheel bearing simpler on a '98? They're press fit - not a DIY job.

DIY for some, wheel bearing cheaper to repair than CV joint. Probably time to do both for a 98 with 150k on it.
