Electrical problems

Most likely the alternator copped some water and if the brushes (which run on the rotor slip-rings to provide excitation) were close to minimum length, they may be stuffed,.. or the regulator didnt like the dousing. The reg and brushes come as one assembley. To be sure tho, you should get some basic tests done , such as alternator output = circa 13.8V.

A simple test for alternator function (apart from the alarm light being on) is to turn headlights on in driveway. Rev engine slightly and note whether the h/lights flare or get brighter,...if not the car is running off what charge is left in the battery.

Try making sure they're completely dry internally before assuming "damage."

You may want to have your alternator checked,you claim to have a battery light and brake light indactions showing at the same time.

"Clarence" I have a1999 Camry xle v6 with engine imobliser system,I also washed my engine compartment and are experiencing eletronic problems as well. The car runs and drives fine as long as you do not turn on the headlights. When you turn on the head lights the reverse lights indicator comes on and the lights out indicator comes on as well and the license plate lights do not come on,they were replaced back about three months ago. If you drive the vehicle when the headlights are on the engine misses at random and the transmission has jumped two gears in between shifts. I took the car to Advance Auto parts to have the codes checked andthe scanner showed no fault codes without the headlights being turned on,but showed a p1780 code with the lights turned on which reads as follows(Manfacurer Contrl Transmission) I was curious if any of you have had this problem before. I will aprecaite any advice on this subject and thank you all in advance.

Maybe the engine compartment fuse box is wet inside , open it up to dry out.

I asked Toyota dealer and was told the alternator is gone though they didn't see the car. Looks I need to change an alternator.

I would trust Saddam Hussein as far as I would trust most dealers. Dry this sucker out, spray with WD-40 anywhere you think it may be wet, and try again. Have the alternator tested.

You should open the kick panel under the fuse box. There are connectors that take wires into the driver's door. My electrical problems were caused by some of those pins being corroded. The dealer said it was due to rain leaking in through the rust over the (replaced) windshield. Later some one told me its a common trick by used car places -- a squirt of battery acid -- to generate future repair income.
