oil change

97 Camry LE 4 cyl. 82,000 miles.

The manual calls for 5W-30 oil. I have 5 quarts of 10W-30 I want to use. I live in Southern Virginia. Will this be OK?

I personally would NOT use any other grade of oil than what the manual recommends. 10W-30 can be used in higher temperatures, whereas 5W-30 is more or an all-temp oil. Why not stick with what the manual says?

Sure, no problem at all.

Use it up. Probably best to use it in the summer where the extra viscosity might do you some good.

well i have a supra turbo (7MGTE engine) and i picked up some mobil 1 synthetic oil, it's rated at 5w-50. not knowing much about oils i assumed that will be fine, but now i'm told it's too thin for my type of engine.

does it all depend on where you live? ie temprature? any advice on what to use?

Whether you use 5Wxx synthetic or 5Wxx dino oil doesn't make a difference. One is not thiner than the other. But synthetics are superior to dino, that's for sure. But it has nothing to do with how "thin" the oil is.

i'm not asking about the difference between sythetic and dinosour oil, i was hoping someone with abit of knowledge could tell me what viscosity rating would be suitable for my supra (7mgte) or just advice about viscosity. i don't have a manual with the car to tell me what rating to use.

A 10w-40 will be fine.

It's a little thicker than desirable for cold starting. But I'd toss out five bucks worth of oil before I'd risk problems with a 20 thousand dollar car;-)

Well Philip- I'll tell yaw's, after some further thought, it would be a waste to toss the 10W-30--- so I'll use it next time I change the oil in my desktop computer.

But for my notebook, I'd definitely only use the 5W-30...

Joe ... it's a good thing to understand the reason WHY one does things. Go ahead and think on your own. It will hurt for only a little while. LOL Dare to pour a little 5w-30 through a dropper ... then a little

10w-30 thru a dropper and then ask yourself if an engine could tell the difference under 50 pounds pressure. LOL Go ahead, try it! :-)
