Problem with 91 Camry, need help!

Hi, there

I have a 91 camry stickshift. It drives fine until recently it started being sluggish or stalling at gear 2 or 3. It became worse recently after I started driving in city traffic. I have to step on the gas very hard now at gear 1 in order to get the car started, otherwise the engine will just stop. The engine seems fine when no gear is engaged except that it sounds louder now probably due to worsening muffler. What could be the problem? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

How many miles on the car, has it been maintained? tuned up ? how ? how long have you had it ? How do you take care of it

For an engine to lose that amount of power there would be something very wrong:

-good idea to get error codes stored by the computer checked at a tuning centre

- is the throttle operating the throttle -body fully?

-fuel delivery to the injectors? is the fuel filter blocked or the pump sluggish?

-ignition-timing (10 deg)-lead/plug condition-strength of spark

-air-filter OK?

-compression OK?

-exhaust not restricted-if the ex is loud, the muffler is probably free

If you have a '91 Camry with a worsening muffler, don't overlook the possiblity of internal restriction in the catalytic converter which could be causing your lack of power. You can also do a rough test using a hand-held vacuum gauge and monitoring intake manifold vacuum -- if the vacuum starts falling (i.e., intake manifold pressure is rising) at high rpm with a constant throttle opening, the exhaust is probably plugged up.
