hi, folks. does anyone know what protocol is used in scanner for toyota camry '99? i heard something like ISO. is it true? what is a good scanner and where to buy it? also is factory repair manual on CD as good as the real one on paper? thanks.

You can buy scannner from autoparts shop, ebay, online, etc. Repair manual, I prefer paper type, easier to read and use as reference in garage. Buy factory service manual from Toyota. If you are patient, they come up on ebay, but price is close to retail price from Ebay. jim
If you have an old laptop you can use it as a scanner. You have to buy a box that converts the protocol from the car into a protocol that your computer can understand (about $80). An obvious advantage of using your PC is that you can produce neat graphs and you can archive the readings for future comparisons.
Software is free. Here is one such system, there are many other.
