Toyota or aftermarket parts?

Hi folksA while ago, I asked opinions on possible reasons for bad fuel mileage.I still haven't found the source of the problem.My fuel mileage went bad overnight last fall. I have a 93 4 cyl. Camry withauto trans.I recently found that the filler neck had small holes and figured it couldbe where the smell of gas was coming from. I had it fixed and the smell isstill there. My mechanic found no trace of leak anywhere else. We will stillinvestigate if it gets worst.My mechanic changed: plugs, air filter, thermostat, O2 sensor. Everythingreads OK on his computer. I went to the local dealer and they told me that Ishould install their Toyota plugs and their O2 sensor. My question is: Isn'ta Bosch universal O2 sensor good enough?Also, the exhaust system looks to be the original one, including catalyticconverter. I thought the cat might be the culprit but I am being told thatwhen the cat goes, you notice a loss in power and other effects. Everythinglooks and sound OK to me.I may have left a few details out but would appreciate any help.Thanks guys.JP

withstillIIsn'tIf the engine-exhaust -analyser indicates the fuel-air ratio is correct overthe engine's operating range (revs) and load,..then the O2 is fine. But thatfinding is contingent on the air-fuel mix being correct and not just atidle.Plugs either fire or dont fire. If the engine mis-fired at high load, thenthe ignition system would need checking out.Whie the codes maybe OK, they dont reflect other potential problems such asbrake drag (see if the car can be moved while its standing (h/brake off) andcoasts without quickly slowing down.If the ignition is not advancing correctly, fueleconomy will suffer. Correctadvance checks go beyond just checking it while free-revving the engine. Theengine also needs to be loaded or fooled into thinking its loaded, byapplying varying manifold pressured to the ECU. I dont know how far yourmechy went into these checks.EverythingA collapsed cat-conv is possible causing increased back-prssure and lousyengine perf and economy, but I would put this...

If the engine doesn't reach operating temperature you'll burn extra gass (replace thermostat) -- how much of a diffewrence are you talking about. In winter in cold areas gas is formulated differently hence you get worse mileage along with it taking longer for the vehicle to warm up. Some Toyota won't shift to high gear until they are warmed up too - hence less MPG. What was it before and what is it now?

Check charcoal canister to see if it's faulty or not. if you don't see any gasoline stain; so it could be vapor. I expect your car has an EGR valve, faulty charcal canister would mess up EGR valve system and emmision control sststem and gasoline will burn more. BTW, exhaust includes CO & NO. CO should be ordorless. NO does not smell like gasoline. One way you check it is by opening the hood and sniffing. If you smell gas under the hood and there are no other leaks, the canister could be saturated with gas. If you pull it out and it reeks of gas, it is likely not working. Good luck. Matt
