Here's the deal. I'm looking to get a whole new tranny for my 1983 4x4 toyota pickup. The only thing is I don't want to buy a regular/standard transmission from toyota or any of the local toyota dealers. Is there any other type of tranny I can get, like some type of performance brand or something like that. Or basically anything that's better than these standard transmissions and stock trannys from toyota?

Ya mean other than the OEM ones that last 150-200k miles? Get one from a Chysler minivan -- they're good for 40k if you take good care of them.
I have a 1981 4x4 with a 4 speed, If I ever have problems I would put a late model junkyard tranmission 5 speed. If you do, tell junkyard fellows you want to pick out the truck it comes out of (the only way).
