1990 3VZ-E, cylinder 6 no compression, LOUD metallic clackety noise

First, to recapmy situation:

While travelling down the freeway today at about 85 mph, I lost some > of my power- there was no accompanying loud noise or anything. > However on slowing down there was indeed a fairly loud metallic > clackety sound eminating from the engine. > > "Listening" along the valve covers with a broomstick didn't work very > well, it was difficult to discern which side let alone pinpoint where > the noise was coming from, eminating from all along the top of the > engine (or maybe underneath). Anyway, cylinder 6 is pretty dead at 40 > psi, all others 135 or greater. Adding oil to cylinder did not help > compression at all. The electrodes on this spark plug were, ah, > devastated. The center elecrode appeared to be missing and there was > alot of (oily) chunky deposit on outer electrode. Removed the valve > cover and the cam lobes appear to be ok, along with plenty of oil. No > oil in coolant nor loss of coolant that I can tell. While driving, > the noise is quietest when I accelerate gently, loudest when > decelerating or idling. > > Ideas on what the problem is are greatly appreciated, I am just about > to attempt to remove the head to check things out. Anything else I > should check first? > > Thanks, > Greg

Mr. Whitewall Junkey opined of my unfortunate situation:

>The mechanical noise could be caused by a loose wrist

How many miles on it before it died?

Oh, sorry, I intended to mention that - only 130K miles. Very sad, like I said, the big end bearing surfaces looked pristine and there wasn't a ring land notch yet on the other cylinder walls. Besides the destroyed piston/cylinder, the engine looked terrific. The condition of the big end bearings on the affected cylinder suggest good bore / crank alignment. The head gasket leak (taken care of by recall) 60K miles ago didn't make it into that cylinder, only a minor external coolant leak occurred. I babied the truck for the first 6/7 years, only using it for excursions while using my '76 Corolla to commute (270K before I donated it still running fine). The last few years I have put on the majority of miles, most long distance to the mountains (SJ to Sierras) and several times to Baja - all the way to Cabo, etc. Good thing it didn't go out in some of the "places" I visited not that long ago! I maintained 'Lil Blue religously, it was pretty much stock, and used offroad a significant amount but nothing too strenuous. Oh well. My next truck will most likely be a Taco with the newer V6. Other sad thing is the "new" rebuilt engine isn't any peppier than the old one with 130K miles for whatever that's worth. Greg
