3.0 L V-6 replacement engine for 91 Toyota 4x4

I'm interested in replacing my 3.0 Liter V-6 that has 300,000 miles on it with one of the newer 2.7 liter 4 cylinder engines. Does anyone know if there is an adapter kit to mate my older transmission with the newer 2.7 liter engine or if my transmission will bolt up to it as is? Does anyone know if this swap has been done in the past?

Why not use the new 4.0 litre V6 or older 3.4V6 or 4Litre V8? Or even better if you can get your hands on a 3.0 TD.

The older 3.4 V-6 requires either a 2" body lift or a hood scoop which I would prefer not to do. I am also looking at this from a gas mileage point of view. The only thing I tow with my truck is a light boat so the 2.7 liter engine has enough torque and more horsepower that my original 150 HP 3.0 V-6. The 2.7 liter engine has been around long enough that it is also readily available.
