3VZE Rebuild

All, I've got 400K kms on a 3VZE 3.0L V6 in an 89 4x4 pick up and am in the process of planning my summer project - an engine rebuild. Q: Is there something(s) that I should be looking out for in the planning process with this particular engine other than the "norm"? There's no hurry as I have an '02 TRD Tacoma as a daily driver in the meantime. I plan to pull and machine the entire assembly along with new pistons, bearings, rings, oil and water pump, heads, timing belt, clutch and pressure plate, etc, etc, etc.

Thanks in advance, Bruce.

Just that you'll probably have trouble removing the camshaft pulleys. Try loosening them BEFORE removing the timing belt, otherwise purchase a pin wrench.

I strongly recommend buying the Toyota engine overhaul kit, as it will be complete and the components are of known quality. Should cost you between $400-$500. The aftermarket kits (from both your local parts desk and from what I've seen advertised on eBay) are about half the price, but tend to have the older head gasket design, the skinnier exhaust donut gaskets, and may not be complete, which can be very frustrating when you're in the middle of a rebuild.

good luck! GTr
