camper shell question

I am thinking of getting a camper shell for an '03 Tundra. Do you have one that you are satisfied with? Does it block rear and side vision enough to be a problem? Can you take it off to haul large stuff? Can one person take it off? Does it cause any road noise? Any further commets would be helpful. GCS

Only the light weight aluminum caps can be removed by one person, and then only with some difficulty. The fiberglass caps can be expected to weigh around 100# on a full-sized bed. Really like my Raider cap, looks good and has held up well for 7 years in the desert sun. Never tried to take it off. no real loss of vision.

I am supposed to have a snugtop installed when they get around to shipping the shell. The top weighs about 160 pounds so you can't lift it without help. The combination of the dark tint of the shell and the truck window makes it a bit hard to see. There is less noise with a shell. Snugtop customer service has been poor and they are slow to ship, I understand the the quality is good but figure on 5 to 6 weeks before they ship. I have been waiting a month and they keep telling me it will come in next week, very poor customer service from Snugtop. -- MZ

I have a fiberglas "ASTRO" brand shell, it also is too heavy for one person, but what I really like are my accessible side windows so that I can get to things in the front of the shell without having to crawl over the rest of the crap. I also the shell carpeted, so when I sleep back there it is really quiet. You will need to use your mirrors, but it is no big deal. THe one thing I do miss about my SUV is the rear window defroster and wiper, however......

To answer you questions:one, I am very satisfied with mine. The top does block the side vision, although you can get optional side window (which I don't have on mine), but when you roll the sides up you loose no range of vision! Yes, you can take it off to haul large loads and it is easy for one person to do it (weights like 35lbs.), not like fiberglass ones where it takes 2 and sometimes 3 people to move it. The web site tells you to drill through you bed rails, this is not necessary. I just baught some c-clamps/wood clamps and clamped the top to my rails and it work perfectly. Actually there is no road noise even though it is a canvas top. Last comment is that only problem is there isn't much security with these tops. Just my .02$ Jake
