Cap recommendations for '99 Tacoma (fiberglass, aluminum, etc.)

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a cap for my 1999 Tacoma (2WD, Std Cab). It's hard to find information on the web with which to compare the various caps. Can anybody recommend (or caution against) specific brands?

In my area (Madison, WI), it seems like I can get an A.R.E. or a Century fiberglass cap for $800-$900, or an aluminum cap for $500-600. The fiberglass caps look better, but what are the other differences? What's a reasonable price for a basic color-matched cap?

There's a local company, Lakeland Truck Caps, that seems to make good caps, but they said they only have a cap for the extended cab Tacoma, not the standard. But weren't the beds the same size on the standard & extended cab Tacomas, at least in 1999?

Finally, I've got a Line-X spray-on liner on the bed and rails; will this make it harder to get a good fit & seal with a cap?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Asher

I can't help with the brand selection. One thing I've learned is to look if the back window goes all the way to the top of the cap. If it does not, you are limited to what you can put thru the opening. I have heard several people that are happy with opening side windows that enable them to reach things in the front of the bed. I don't think the LineX will be a problem - a foam tape is applied to the bottom edge of the cap to make the seal. Good luck with your selection. Ed
