fuel injector service?

I asked here some months ago about whether or not the Toyota fuel injection service was worth the price. It was suggested here that I buy the injector fuel cleaning stuff and do it myself. I have yet. I just got the following email from my dealer. It looks like they do more than adding injector cleaning fluid- and they're discounting the price. I'm not at all inclined to do any work on the truck myself- no knowledge, no skill, no tools- but if just adding something to the gas would be equivalent, I think I could handle it. Suggestions? They're price of $89 doesn't seem unreasonable. What I'm really concerned is that if I don't have them do it, then I have some engine problem, they may blame me for not getting this done. Also, a friend says some of the better gas stations add detergents to the gas which reduce the need for this work.

(the following is the email from my dealer)

************************************************ With the rising cost of fuel, and increasing emission standards, it is imperative that your Tacoma run at top fuel efficiency. One way to ensure this is to have your fuel/air induction (fuel injection) system serviced.

Deposits accumulate on intake valves, injectors, ports, fuel injectors and combustion chambers causing loss of power, rough idle hesitation, misfire, pinging, knocking, poor mileage and hard starting.

The service department at Haddad Motors wants to help you get the best fuel economy and make sure that your Tacoma meets emission requirements.

Utilizing specialized tools, one of our skilled technicians will:

a.. Clean fuel injectors.

b.. Clean throttle body.

c.. Clean plenum and air intake system.

d.. Remove combustion chamber deposits.

e.. Correct balance of fuel and air in system.

Results:

a.. Reduced emissions.

b.. Restore horsepower.

c.. Increased fuel economy.

d.. Starts and idles smooth and runs quieter.

e.. $89.95 plus tax (Reg $110.00)

Recommended service interval is 15,000 miles.

Will NOT clean as thoroughly as the professional cleaning. Will be adaquate if you aren't having a problem such as pinging, poor idle, increased fuel consumption or others listed in email from your dealer.

As long as you aren't experiencing any of the symptoms listed then you should be ok. If you are, then based on what you say you lack, I suggest the dealer or other mechanic of your choice.

True, Chevron is one of them.

If you can afford the $89, you have more than the 15K miles and want a peace of mind then go for it, it shouldn't hurt anything and will establish a stronger relationship between you and your dealer, should you have a problem. They could only penalize you for not getting this done if you are experiencing one or more of the symptoms and don't get the service done. HTH, davidj92

I agree if you see any of the suggested things get it done.

Well, at about 24,000 miles, it runs perfect. I'll make a point of using an additive- as long as the work isn't legally required by the warranty.

A top additive to tank from time to time will do fine if you are worried. I put 220k in 12 years on a camary 4cyl before it was totaled in a freak wreck and I never had injectors cleaned one and it was still gettin in the high 30?s on the hiway and ran great too. If the car runs fine this is a "make work" thing for dealer and a revenue genertors as well as poeple panic about fuel prices and they play on this.

Yes save your money, it is not require for warranty, it is one of those revenue generating schemes for dealers that are looking to make up for lost sales profits these days and try to get you in more foer service that you do not really need.
