Need Head-Gasket or?? 88 22RE

Hello I hate to ask here but your experiences might help me on what to do. If I was not so broke I would know LOL

I've had the 88 4X4 for 5 years and love it. I've ran it up to

167 K Just been through spending about $700.00 on it new chain front oil seal and having a guy spend a couple hours trying to find out why its started running bad he could not find a problem and blamed bad gas I knew that was BS.

Next I found out about the throttle body. I cleaned it and it ran great but not for long. My head-gasket blew !!

I want to keep this truck for a long time !! My question is will a new or rebuilt head screw up my lower end?? And what's the chance of my head being OK and just needing a gasket.

This engine has not been a oil burner. I really would have to dig deep to get a new engine. I guess I want to know if you think its worth chancing just working on the upper end.

Thanks A Bunch...Greg

How do you know it's the head gasket?

I think I had a gasket problem all along. I did not get water in the oil until I just replaced the radiator this last week I think this helped the gasket get worse and I know have water in the oil the water is disappearing and the heater is really hot !! I've decided to put in a new long block & clutch. Then I'm in good shape.

Thanks !! Greg

Be sure to have the head milled before you reinstall it. That way, you'll know for sure that it's flat...

in 1999 my 1985 2wd 22R Toyota Truck blew a HG. At that time I had a new HG put on, replaced the timing chain, put in metal chain guides from DOA Racing, and insisted on having the oil pan removed to remove any of hte plastic chain buid remnants. At that point the mechanic talked me into doing a in frame overhaul (just rebore the cylinders and put in new rings). I did all that and at the time it had 192,000 on it, now I have

234,000 and runs strong!
