Need help - coolant issue

1989 Toy Pickup Just installed remanufactured engine. Experienced an issue with the idle climbing, sputtering, dropping and slowly climbing again. Thanks to you folks I fixed a small leak, added coolant and that fixed the issue for a day.

Now I have a new issue. From a cold start the engine warms up to about three-fourths normal operating temperature, then cools down to cold while still driving. Of course I parked it immediately. Let it cool down completely, checked fluids, drove it and it did the same thing. Checked coolant level again. It is full. I have a new thermostat and water pump in the engine. The heater also behaves the same way.

To me, it acts like the heater core is plugged, but the temperature gauge shouldn't creep down to the cold side. If anything, it should get warmer (or overheat) if the coolant isn't flowing properly.

Thanks, Darin

Sounds like the thermostat may be in upside-down. HTH, davidj92

Toyota has a redesigned thermostat that is supposed to correct that problem. Here is an old post about it. Follow the l>

This should explain the problem and give you the solution, too:

The leak was just from the top coolant hose from thermo to radiater. I put my original hose back on because the one that came with the install kit was not the best fit. I really didn't think to look for a leak until the group said the low coolant was probably the cause if idle issue.
