replacing head gasket concerns

Hi all, I'm a proud owner of a 94 toyota pickup with the 22re motor. My concern regards the head. To make a long story short, I was orignally replacing the timing chain and gears with one from lc engineering and accidentally dropped my head on the cardboard I put on the ground. My fingers slip from some of the oil that was on the hooks on the head. It was about a 6-7 inch drop, one side falling faster than the other. I bolted it back on the block with the new head gasket and wondering what I should be looking for in terms of damage. Also when turning the crank, is it supposed to be tough to turn at one point of the cycle? The cam seems to turn easy though. I rather take off the head and get another gasket rather than unbolt everything. Thanks!

It's not likely that a 6-7 inch drop onto cardboard would cause any damage to the head that would result in NO compression... Are your spark plugs in?? I know... sounds like an unbelievabably obvious question... but I've been there done that.. if the head gasket is new, and the head was bolted down properly, to the correct torque specs, then it should have compression... If you damaged the head, then it is very unlikely you'll be able to tell what exactely it is, unless of course it is obvious.. there could be hairline cracks that the naked eye couldn't spot.. since it is all bolted together... try turning it over by means of the starter and doing a compression check... then you'll know for sure...

thanks for the reply. It was worrying me this whole time that the head was going to be damaged. Reading all the things that happened on the board made me nervous. Either way though, I'm glad I did it and spotted the "usual" plastic guide being cheweed away. Scary stuff there.

When turning the crank by hand, there will it a hard spot when two of the pistons start to compress the intake air-(fuel).

The only thing to check would be to check if you have bent any valves that would have been open if they protrude past the head face, Easy enough to check place head chamber up and valves closed and fill chamber with penetrating oil (WD40 ect.) and it shouldn't leak away if the valves are sealing.
