Vacuum Hoses Don't Match Shop Manual

Two pairs of the myriad of vacuum hoses on the right side of my 3VZ-E are hooked up reverse from what the shop manual shows. They are the ones that are connected to the forward two VSV's, the ones for FPU and EGR. I was very careful in labeling these things when I pulled the air intake and, when I went to put it back together, I checked it against the manual and determined that these two were reversed from the configuration shown in the manual.

Which should I go by: empirical data or the definitive source? I haven't had any fly-by-night folks work on the truck but it is possible someone (even at the dealership - gasp) could have buggered it up as I have found other things on the truck that aren't quite kosher. On the other hand, I have also found (minor) things in the manual that are not correct.

Maybe it doesn't matter. The pairs of hoses are going to the correct VSV - it is just the input and output are reversed. But, if anyone knows, I would like to hook it up the correct way. Currently, I have split the difference: I hooked up one back the way I found it and the other according to the shop manual. Hedging my bet, as it were.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom that you can pass my way.

There is a nice schematic in the Emission Control section of the 1988 Repair Manual for vehicles with the 3VZ-E motor (page EC-3.) Note that this is a separate manual from the standard one used for maintenance on the overall truck and/or the 22RE motor: publication RM078U vs RM077U.
