vent odor in 02 tacoma

Feb 29, 2004 2 Replies

i have a 02 tacoma trd, bought new. past 2 months i noticed a musty, sweet smell from the heater/vent,every now and then. mostly during startup on a damp day.

went to the dealer, they said "thats the smell of heat".(i'm 37 and just found out that heat smells...???)

called customer service and complained, they set up an appt and sprayed turtlewax ODOR-X in,after the smell of oranges went away, back came the smell.

anyone have this prob,and/or a solution.

thanks, Gary northeast Pa.

Here are two possibilities:

You may have a leaking heater core. The odor of antifreeze can be described as a sweet smell. Heater core leaks can be small enough that there is no noticeable reduction in coolant level at the radiator or expansion tank.

If you have A/C, the evaporator drain tube may be clogged. This will cause the water which condenses on the evaporator coils to be retained in the housing, creating a moist environment for mold growth and a mildew smell. Make sure you see water dripping from the tube when the A/C is running. This will be best noticed on a hot humid day when more condensate will be created.
