well, that's just plain silly....

Not always Joey. If the oil bath is filter is broken, without the sponge in it or with holes in it, It may be better to use a paper filter. I've seen many bugs driving around with an oil bath filter with a broken snout, and no oil, and no sponge. I figure that is the same as no filter at all.

the OP didn't say his was defective...you are assuming... removing the oilbath filter and replacing with an aftermarket filter for "looks" is counter-productive.... all parts of the oilbath filter, including the casing, is repairable...(it doesn't have a sponge in it)
Yeah, I'm just doing it for looks, and plus my is dented in pretty good, wut it the point of the oil bath???
The stock cleaner, either oil or paper, is an excellent filter.
It has one additional function, which the aftermarket ones don't provide- heated air intake. Anytime outside air temp is below 50F (Yes! 50 degrees!!) and very humid (picture a foggy day) there is a definite possibility of carb icing.
I'll spare you the details, but the heated intake makes carb icing far less likely.
Jim
ok thank you, i'll forget that idea...
the oilbath is an excellent system, and looks "right" on a stock vw carb....Speedy Jim nailed it with the other important part...
ok... thxs, i'm still w8ing on my STUPID book...

from what I have seen, you don't NEED a "STUPID" book...you have it covered...
Hey Speedy Jim, do you know of any pics online showing how to hook up the heating flap on a stock air cleaner for a 70 bug? I reverted to the stock from a cheap paper filter that the previous owner had installed but I've always had the hot air hose valve flapper doohicky wired shut (since it's usually warm here in TX.)
Wow, well done for holding off, Chris, I was expecting one of those alot earlier !!
Scotty, please send each message once only, thanks
James
It's buried in the parts book:
'70 had a small crank arm sticking out of the "front" of the fan shroud (facing you). A tiny Bowden cable connected that to the flap under control of the thermostat.
If you don't have all that mech in place, it won't do any good...
Jim
Ah, that may be why - neither of my bugs had thermostats when I moved the air cleaner over from the parts car to my daily driver. Thanks for looking that up. Slowly I'm putting my bug back in order but I haven't gotten a thermostat and set of flaps yet.
I'd keep that oil bath air cleaner. It does a great job. Andy
I am with Andy here. The oil bath air cleaner also keeps the fuel/air mixture correct at higher engine rpms. The paper might lean out the mixture some at the higher engine rpms, but that should depend on your carb too.
Now if you ask for proof, I would have to search through years of books/magazines. :-|
