65 beetle transaxle-transmission

I rebuilt a 65 many years ago-- beautiful car- but have always been worried about the transmission. I put a 1600cc into this thing-- reamed out the bell housing to make it fit and made all the changes needed-- works fine for the most part- but now bad about popping out of first. and-- it tends to want to chatter when taking off in first gear or going in reverse if you don't ease it out.. My question is -- what other transaxles can go in there-- If I take it out I'd like to look into other possibilites-- or just rebuild this one..

Thanks--

up to 1968, but it usually has 4 bolt drums Or purchase a remanned unit Are you sure the clutch cable tubing has not broken away in the tunnel? Or the mounts?

Mounts are new-- Tubing I'm sure is fine-- It work's fine most of the time-- Popping out of first is definitely a sign something is wrong. A normal easy start out of first gear or reverse is ok. If you tried to take off with any aggressiveness the chatter happens. I don't believe it's the pressure plate? Could be? no problems in any other gears, and I can take off in 2nd without any problems.. I forgot about the 4 bolts-- I've got custom wheels I dont' want to change.

You can use later units than that, I bolted a -74 straight into my -56 T1, requires a Early(Pre -67 if I'm not mistaken) T2 nose cone, or adapter front mount, nothing to it..

Not enough slack in the bowden tube if you are lucky, more likely missaligned pressure plate springs or oil on the disk.

I thought that some of the later transmissions would not allow the swing axle tubes to be attached? Like only 1 side cover instead of 2? Maybe that was in 1975 and later.

A '67 box is SA and uses a 12V starter. Same TO bearing as your '65 so clutch isn't affected. And it has 5-bolt drums...

'68 same same, except for 4-bolt drums and slight axle difference.

It will pop out of first if it is shuddering violently, so it's not necessarily a transaxle fault. But it will become a transaxle fault if you continue to drive it with this happening.

If you do not have enough 'sag' in the bowden tube this will happen. You should check it, and if needed fix, by placing more washers between the end of the bowden tube and the bracket on the transaxle. Could also be an oil contaminated clutch. Does your ride leak oil from the junction between the transaxle and the engine?
