68 Bus stalls mysteriously

My 68 bus has been stalling for no apparent reason. It does not seem to follow any pattern. It will just suddenly have no engine power (green and red lights come on). I pull over to the side of the road and when I turn the key it always starts right up as if nothing was ever wrong. About 2 weeks ago it did this twice while driving halfway through a 60 mile trip on the highway. Once after about 25 miles and then again after another 20 or so. Before returning from this trip I checked most electrical connections and scraped some minor corrosion from the inside of the distributor cap terminals and blew off some graphite dust (I think thats what it is) off of the top of the rotor. This seemed to get me home without any problems but then the next day after some short driving it suddenly died again.

I have driven about 200 miles since then and it has not happened again so far. I have replaced the generator with an Alternator over a year ago, the carb and fuel pump are about 3 years old and the battery is about a year old. The only thing I haven't replaced is the coil, could it be going? Any ideas?

TIA, Brett

I agree. Check the wire that goes from the coil to the choke heat element. It sometimes rubs between the carb and fanhousing, causing intermitent short circuits, it can even cause a fire. Check also the wire that enters the engine compartment and goes to the coil

  • terminal. This wire may also rub on the fanhousing.
