71 Bug thats smoking

Well, I finally got my 71 running with a 1600, 2 barrel progressive stage carb, new distributor, tires, brakes, and on and on. Check many others things and did pass TX inspection and was glad to be able to drive it fully legal. Until it was reported that there was to much smoke.

The engine that I bought, was suppose to only have 1000 miles on it. I trusted the guy and the engine looked like it was rebuilt, etc..

Well, it sat in the gargage for a while until I got time to do the swap out and get the other things done.

Is it possible that the valve guides or something else could have deteriated while it sat??? If so, what could it be and how hard will it be to fix.

I sure don't want to have to pull that engine again. I've already sank about $3000 into it.

The wifes view is that its the black beast that eats money..

Thanks

Seems every engine ever bought was just rebuilt! How long did it sit and was oil shot into the sparkplug holes? Nost likely the rings rusted up and aren't sealing. Doubtful its the valve guides. Do a compression check -- if below about 90 pounds then its the rings. If indeed it was just rebuilt and didn't sit too long then perhaps the rings haven't seated yet? Spray some oil in spark plug holes and run it a couple of weeks to see if that breaks the rings free and they seat. . Sure hope you don't have the total $3000 in the engine. Yes you will have to pull the engine to fix it -- rings are like $30 but lots of work..

Your Bug is smoking? Have you tried the "patch?" Perhaps a stern talking to about the dangers of that unhealthy habit.

Oh...wait a minute.

Never mind.

I bet its the carb. Always run rich, unless seriously set up. What colour are the plugs? Sooty or oily smoke ?
