71' Super Worth $500 ?

Hello, I know a guy that works with my wife that has a 71' Super for sale for $500. Here are some specs that he has told me so far . Front fenders are dinged up from putting it in the ditch .The back window leaks a little and has started to rust the rear deck. The front windsheild has been replaced from hitting a pheasant , New exhaust , and probably some other pluses or minus's that I forget . The big kicker is that two headbolts are stripped out , so one side of the engine is low on compression . Is this a problem that could be helicoiled and why would this happen ? Oh ya, it is a single port , not duel.

He said everything works on it as far as controls .

Just by the sounds of this , doues it sound like it is worth $500 ?

Oh ya, it does have a current up to date title .

Thanks, Raz

Single port on super, was it swaped out for earlier? Anyway I think if you are capable of pulling the engine out, and tearing it down to short block you can replace head studs. But then again if you already that far on tearing it down, you migh as well do a complete rebuild.

as far as front fenders "dinged up" goes, I would check frontend to see if there is any other damage besides to the fenders...

$500 sounds reasonable, if you willing to do the work yourself. From your post it doesn't sound like the car is a complete mess, but will need quite a bit of work to get to the reasonable driving state. Since the car is not currently registered, I presume it's been sitting around for a while. Which brings me to the point that you will have to go throught breaks, steering, fuel systems to ensure that everything is in order and safe to be on the road.

Good luck, Ant> my thought would be yeah ... i have seen people pay more then 500$ for > one that

The motor is nothing to worry about at that price.

any bug - you need to check heater chanels and floor pans - can be expensive. on the super pay lots of attention to the frame head. - replacing that is VERY expensive !

So - engine (or mechanical)- no problem rot - expensive !

It sounds like something that would sell for $1000 to $1500 here in central NC.

The car IS currently registered . It has been less than a year since it has been road worthy and driven almost daily . He says that it still runs but doesn't have much power because of the right side head studs being stripped and leaking compression . I live probably 13 miles away . Would it hurt anything to drive it home ? What is the worst thing that could happen ? Could the lower end be helicoiled and hold ? I am planning on going over this weekend to look at it . Maybe if it looks good enough Santa will get it for me ! Thanks, Raz

A bad head leak will eat a hole in the head, possibly bad enough to not be repairable. (Aluminum welding will be required, no guarantees if it holds or not in the future..)

After any head leak, the heads must be flycut to get a straight, smooth sealing surface.

you're looking at replacing one or both heads, possibly cylinders too.

And yes, you can helicoil the case, they're called case-savers in the vw world. (solid inserts)

Jan,

why bother reparing old heads? by the time he is done w/ old ones it would cost as much if not more if he were to buy new ones. I had a machine shop take out broken exhaust stud by the time they were done I could've had myself a new set of heads. And that was just a stud...

What is the concern about frame heads ? Do they rust or get damaged ? Thanks, Raz

rot was my concern - it looked ok till I started poking around and found it needed replacing :-0 Its a big job - but on the super, the cost of the frame head is 10 times (yes TEN!!!) that of a standard bug :-(

also - if you see accident damage on the front end - I would walk away. Supers get the 'shimmeys' real easy and need the front end to be 100% straight.
