Advice on a couple of issues, please.

Hey all,

Coupla questions about my '69 Bug.

  1. The engine really vibrates the vehicle at certain RPM's, leading me to believe a previous owner probably replaced the tranny mounts with urethane replacements. The engine/tranny sits in there rock-solid. If I were to pick up a set of more compliant (i.e. rubber) mounts, what are the odds I could replace them without dropping the engine and tranny? I saw this discussed in here before, but it's been a while and I'm way to lazy to do a Google search right now.

  1. It's ball-joint time (stock beam axle/ball joint front end). I have several options:

a. Buy four ball joints for about $65 total (plus shipping, etc.), have a local shop press the new ones in for me. b. Buy four trailing arms with new ball joints already pressed in. $200 total from aircooled.net. c. Buy four trailing arms with new ball joints already pressed in, along with shipping back my old cores. $80 from SoCal Imports. d. A couple of members from my local VW club are recommending going to Kustom 1 Warehouse and getting a complete beam axle kit (price unknown, as their website is terrible to navigate).

Any suggestions? Option c. is looking tempting.

Thanks!

I used Kustom1 trailing arms with the new German balljoints. ($80.00 for the set of 4 w/core refunded after they get the old ones back)

Also on a '69 type 1. You may want to check Real Source for new camber adjusters. (PN 300-014) Mine were frozen in, and wouldn't come out.

Quality parts that have lasted 2 years now, with no degradation of boots or joints.

Here's the "after" photo and story.

Great. That's the way I might just go. If I can find the bloody things on their website. I searched Ball Joint, Trailing, Torsion, all kinds of things. Do they have a paper catalog?

Also, I noticed on you website that you used the Kustom 1 carpet kit. How's that holding up? We'd been pricing carpet kits at $150+ at WW and a couple others. The Kustom1 price is sure tempting.

Ditto what Ben said. The carpet kit is holding up very well, as is the padded dash I got from them. Kustom1 has a 4 page ad/catalog in VWTrends and Hot VW Magazine. You can call them direct at 1-888-997-9894.
