big engine question

Hello,

I have a question regarding the building of big VW engines. I am a novice about such matters so please bear with me.

Sometime ago, I had a discussion with someone regarding building a VW Beetle engine. He adviced me to do a bigger engine (than the 1641cc one) because the case would be less stressed.

I take it that building bigger engines 1641cc, 1776cc 1835cc etc. involves placing larger p&c into the engine case.

If you're placing larger and bigger p&c into the case, you need to machine (bore) the holes, increasing the diameter to accomodate the new p&c.

My mechanic showed me the size of the 1600cc holes and the area he needed to increase.... but to do so would be to weaken the case.

Can someone please enlighten me?

Confused,

There's thousands of big-bore Type-1 engines running around with no problems of weakened cases. If you use the correct fasteners and do the proper routine maintenance (like checking the head torque), you should be okay. A well-built 1776 with dual Kadrons will be quite reliable and its power will really surprise you. The clue is _properly_ built engine. No shortcuts.
