Bug luggage racks question

I am thinking about getting one of those repro luggage racks that are in the mags. The prices range from $129 to $240. Most of the ones I have seen are "break down for easy shipping" types and come, for the lower price, with painted metal frames, not chromed. What I am wondering is if anyone on the list has bought one of the cheaper ones and what is your impression. Are they decently constructed and durable or are they just for bolting on on show days? Please don't respond to my email as this might be my wife's Xmas present, she has been wanting one for her '60 ragtop, and we share the same account. Thanks,.

I bought one of the Empi ones a few years back. The paint on the metal and the varnish on the slats pretty much sucks. If your gonna leave it on all the time you should maybe repaint it and seal the slats (not really a big deal at all). As far as strength, well I hauled 30 foot FG ladders, unbuilt boxed up furniture (long thin and heavy boxes filled with pressboard puzzles) tires, body parts, even another roof rack I bought at a swap meet! They are very handy to have but they can bugger the paint a bit if you are not careful. And you may want to make sure its gonna clear the rag section. Mark Detro Englewood, FL

We have 3 types.... repro (no break down)... repro (break down)... and original.

I agree with the prior comments. RErpo paint and varish sucks... good for a rack that you'll actually use.

I'd order the breakdown ... assemble it then have it welded locally.

My favorite racks are the non-wood 60s versions... they're very sturdy and no wood to play with. common swap meet item.
