Bug rear wheel grease seals - IRS

Question for any of you that may know: Are the rear axle grease seals on a IRS car the same as the seals on a swing axle car? My local supplier says yes, I'm not so sure. Also would the O-ring included with the swing axle rear seal kit be the same as the O-ring seal in the IRS car? Thanks in advance!

Dane, I have bought "universal" Packages of seals in the past, that had all of the parts to do either kind. Is it possible that is what your local guy is trying to sell?

If he is, you can find all the parts needed and have lots and lots of leftovers................on either type of rear end.

No, it looked like a regular swing axle seal kit....and he assured me that the big black grease seal was the same as an IRS seal.

I dunno about that.

I bought a swing axle rear seal kit for my '73 Beetle just to get the big o-ring and the paper gasket for the brake backing plate. I got the rear wheel seal seperately. I didn't take the time to match the two seals together to see if the were the same.

It may be the same seal, I'm not sure, but an IRS uses 2 per side while the swing axle kit only gives you one.

Both the seal and the o-ring are listed as different parts to those used on the swing axle. I can't tell you precisely what the difference is, though I think the IRS parts are smaller in in one way or another.
